Admission Requirements to the University and Program Length

90-Credit program

Applicants from Québec institutions are required to have successfully completed a two-year pre-university or a three-year pre-professional program in the CEGEP leading to a Diplôme d'Etudes Collégiales (DEC). No specific CEGEP profile is required for the Major in Contemporary Dance. However, prior experience in Contemporary Dance is expected.

Mature Entry program

Applicants 21 years of age by August 1st, or older, who have been out of school for a minimum of 12 months and who lack the CEGEP diploma (or equivalent), may be eligible to enter the University through the Mature Entry Plan. These students, depending on previous academic background, are normally required to complete 18 credits in addition to the 90 credits required for the BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) degree.

Extended Credit Program (Out of Town Applicants)

Applicants from outside the province of Québec, who would be eligible for admission to a four-year degree program in their home province or state, may be admitted into an extended credit or four-BFA degree program at Concordia University. These applicants are required to complete 30 credits in addition to the 90 normally required for the BFA degree. These credits should be selected in consultation with the adviser from Contemporary Dance. Students who complete courses required in the Major in Contemporary Dance as part of these 30 credits must replace these courses in their major program with additional credits in dance selected in consultation with an adviser.

Auditions (2010 dates: April 23, 24,25)

The Faculty of Fine Arts does not contact applicants to arrange for your audition. This is your responsibility.

Applicants must register for one of the auditions by completing the pre-audition questionnaire and selecting a date. Submit your completed questionnaire to the Department administrator either online, by post or in person. Normally, you should receive confirmation of your audition date a week after reception of your questionnaire.

All applicants to one of the Major programs listed above are required to attend an audition/interview or complete a video audition as part of the admissions requirements. There is no audition fee.

Audition/Interview in person

The audition will consist of a group contemporary technique class, followed by an improvisation session. You will then individually perform a 2-3 minute solo choreography composed by you, with or without musical accompaniment. Your solo should represent your personal choreographed expression, creativity and sense of structure. An interview with the faculty evaluators will complete the audition process.

There is no dress code per se but it's recommended that you wear clothing that allows teachers to see the movement clearly. Auditions are done in bare feet but do bring a pair of socks if needed.

MP3 connections and CD players are provided; verify that your CD can play correctly in a CD player and not just on your computer.

Please note: Applicants are expected to have completed 1-2 years in dance prior to audition.

Audition by video

Live auditions are preferable. You get to see the people and facilities and we get to see you in a group. However, when an out-of-town applicant is unable to appear for auditions in Montréal,  it is possible to audition by sending us a videotape or dvd. Formats accepted: VHS (NTSC i.e. North American standard) or DVD (Pal, Secam, NTSC).

Deadline to submit video or dvd: April 13th

Guidelines for your video

  1. Introduce yourself to the camera so we can clearly identify you
  2. Answer all the questions below:

    1. How did you hear about the program ?
    2. What specifically interests you in pursuing a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) degree in contemporary dance ?
    3. Do you see yourself as a choreographer, performer, a mix of both or something else ?
    4. Share with us your dreams and/or ambitions in dance.
    5. Please feel free to add any other pertinent information regarding your experience or views.

Your dance audition must include:

  1. A progression of a modern or contemporary or urban technique class (not classical or jazz) might include excerpts of warm-up, floor work, combinations, jumps and travelling sequences.  If video taken in a group class, please wear clothing that makes you easily identifiable. Up to 15 minutes
  2. Improvisation of your choice, with or without music. Up to 5 minutes
  3. Choreographed self-solo, (not improvised) with or without music. This should represent your personal choreographed expression, creativity and sense of structure. 2-3 minutes
  4. If applicable, you may also add short sequences of your other choreographies.

We suggest that you consider the questions before taping, and that you ask a friend to act as the interviewer. This is just a little easier than talking directly to a camera.

Checklist:

Incomplete or poor quality recording may delay your audition results.  Please view your entire videotape/dvd before sending, to ensure that it has been properly copied.
